A report by Lieutenant Wisteria
The final of the Cloudbase’s popular, light-hearted,
general knowledge quiz – The Frivolous Pursuit Jamboree - was held last week
when three teams battled it out before Colonel White and a knowledgeable and
enthusiastic crowd, in the Small Lecture Theatre. ‘Team Yale’ – Symphony Angel and Captain Magenta –
had the best of a close-fought encounter with the ‘Commonwealth’ Team of Rhapsody Angel and Lieutenant
Green, just edging into second place with a high-scoring final round. But, once again, the ‘Anglo-American’ team of Captain
Blue and Captain Scarlet – this year’s favourites for the title- proved
unstoppable, racking up a
record score of 167 points, with both team members scoring maximum
points in their ‘specialist’ rounds. However, the final was not without controversy. An objection from Symphony Angel when
Captain Scarlet was allowed to do the singing for one of Captain Blue’s music
round questions, was over-ruled by the Quizmaster, to the delight of the
audience, on the somewhat specious grounds that allowing Captain Blue to sing in public
probably contravened the Geneva Convention, in regard of ‘Cruel and Unusual’
treatment! But the contest was
played in the spirit of good-sportsmanship that has characterised this year’s
competition and everything ended
amicably. So, our heartiest
congratulations to the worthy winners and our commiserations to the gallant
runners-up. Colonel White presented the prizes, The coveted FPJ
Trophy and a selection of book and music tokens. As usual, the organisers would like to thank Doctor
Fawn - our unflappable quizmaster - and Lieutenant Silver, who kept score
throughout the competition and, of course, everyone who took part over the
past months. There have been some
exciting and entertaining rounds leading to this spectacular final. A special ‘thank you’ to Lieutenant Flaxen, who
devised the tough questions for most of the competition this year. As the final was delayed, due to Captain Scarlet’s
injury during the successful mission in Berlin, the start of this year’s
competition has been postponed until July.
Any team wishing to enter should contact the Lieutenant Wisteria, on
ext. 6669, before May 30th.
Timings and venues for the early rounds will be posted in June.
